A microgrid is a discrete energy system consisting of distributed energy sources (renewables "windrotor and solar", conventional "diesel and grid", storage "batteries") and electric loads capable of operating in parallel with, or independently from, the main grid. The primary purpose is to ensure reliable, affordable energy security for commercial,industrial consumers.
Microgrids offer significant potential to reduce operating costs though integration of renewable resources, which offer limitless supplies of OPEX-free energy, and which are experiencing reductions in CAPEX costs, bringing them closer to parity with traditional grid supplies. In some instances, deals can be structured so that direct capital investment is feasible, with paybacks typically within 6-9 years.
